The transporter bridge
Built by Ferdinand Arnondin in 1900 in Rochefort,
it still used nowadays; the skiff carries pedestrians and bikes from one
bank of the River Charente to the other, the
crossing takes 4 minutes. Listed as a historic monument in 1976, this metal
structure has been designed to not hinder inland navigation thanks to his
50 meters height. It is the last transporter bridge in France. When looking
at the bridge, you will certainly recognize the touch of Eiffel!
After crossing the River Charente, follow the interpretation tour and go
to Echillais to visit the Transporter House.
Thanks to permanent and temporary exhibitions, this place gathers some information
and pictures about bridges throughout the world.
