Saintes
A city of art and history with a Gallo-roman past, it is
crossed by the Charente. In Saintes, you can’t miss the Germanicus
Arch, an old door of the city and the arrival point of a roman road. The
arch overhangs the river. It was dismantled and then rebuilt at his current
place.
But the city gathers some other places dating from Antiquity or the Middle-Ages:
the Amphitheatre, the public baths and the Abbaye aux Dames (the Ladies
Abbey). The Amphitheatre of Saintes dates from the Antiquity and thanks
to its tiers, which could contain up to 15 000 persons, it holds shows from
Sites en Scène,
every year.
Cruises are organised in Saintes, along the river and you can even rent
a boat without a licence to discover the surroundings on the stream of your
desires.
