La Rochelle
Famous for his towers, the city has kept heritage links
with New France. Thus, before creation of the city of Rochefort, it was
the place where colonists would board to sail to this still unknown land.
To understand the relationships between the town port with the New World,
come and visit the Museum of New World, which presents their relations since
the 16th century. You will find explanations about the triangular trade
set up by the city: cloth
sale and purchase of slaves in Africa, sale of these slaves and purchase
of colonists' products (coffee, cocoa, spices) in the New World and resale
of these goods in Europe. The Museum of the New World is located in the
Hôtel Fleuriau
.
And do not leave La Rochelle without visiting its three towers: St Nicolas
(the big one), the Chaîne (“the Chain”, the next to) and
a little further away the Lanterne (“the Lantern”, or the Four
Sergeants).
