The touristic
activities, in the river Richelieu catchment area,
are mainly linked to the summer period and to nature : nautical leisure,
outdoor activities... Thanks to Montréal, which is close by,
the river Richelieu attracts many visitors for short stays, who are
interested in nature but also in heritage and in arts.
The Haut-Richelieu receives the major part of the
tourists, who usually have chalets as second houses. In the summer,
around 27 500 visitors come to spend their holidays in the Haut-Richelieu.
The leisure activities are linked to nature and to protection of the
environment : many cycle roads (« green roads ») cross
the territory (on more than 4 000 km).
The touristic industry in Montérégie
represents 2,8% of the Quebec GDP. It generates 130 000 direct jobs
and 48 000 indirect jobs. Montérégie is the eighth region
the most visited in Quebec, and it welcomes 1,2 million tourists a
year, who spend 155,5 million dollars during theur stay. The hotel
occupancy rate is of 46 % through all the year.
